The Story of Judge Beyond Death
In Hindu mythology, it is said that every story existing in this universe was first told by Shiva to his wife Shakti. These stories, filled with knowledge, were overheard by birds flying in the sky, fishes swimming in the oceans, and trees standing in the jungles. They took these stories all across the world, and in this manner, we were introduced to all these stories.
Consider me as a medium like birds, fishes, and trees to deliver these stories to you…
अन्यथा संततिर्जायते, यमेन त्वं न मृत्युम् पश्यसि।
-From the Kathopanishad
Once upon a time, Sage Satyakama was teaching his disciples about Dharma, on the sacred banks of river yamuna. While unfolding the intricacies of Dharma, he mentioned the name Dharmaraj, whom the world also known as Yamraj, the God of death and justice.
As the wind rustled the leaves and the sun dipped low over the horizon, one of his keen disciples, Parishodhaka, gently asked:
"Guruji, who is Yamaraj? How did he became the god of Yamaloka? Why is he feared, and yet called the dharamaraj ?"
The Sage smiled, he closed his eyes and said:
"To know yama, Parishodhika, we first must know the story of Sun and his wife Sanjana..."
Surya, the radiant God known for his discipline, courage and brilliance of thousand flames. His wife Sanajana (also known as Saranayu) was the daughter of Vishwakarma, the divine architect of gods.
Their union was blessed with two children. The elder one, a calm and thoughtful boy named Yama, and his younger sister, Yami full of curiosity and playfulness, who would later take the form of the sacred river Yamuna, purifying millions with her flow.
It was a small but peaceful family. The children grew and with time, seasons changed, years passed and slowly .. so did something in Sanjana.
Though she loved her family deeply, Sanjana began to withdraw. The brilliance of Surya; divine, blazing, ever-present, became too much for her mortal nature to endure. Day after day, she tried to hold herself together, but the weight of that endless radiance left her feeling invisible, overwhelmed and suffocated.
This happens to us too, doesn’t it?
We may love someone dearly — but sometimes, they grow so tall, so brilliant, that they forget to look down.
The mountain of their success rises so high that the voices cheering from the base camp are no longer heard.
Sanjana longed for stillness. For silence. For shade.
But how could she tell the Sun God, the king of planets, that his light was burning her soul? So, torn between her duty and her pain, she made a difficult choice.
One day, without a word, she quitely left. Before leaving, Sanjana replaced herself with her faithful servant, Chhaya. A woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to her. She entrusted her with the role of wife and mother, hoping her absence would remain hidden… at least for a little while.
Surya, lost in his duties and brilliance, did not realize that his real wife was gone.
Chhaya fulfilled her role. She served as queen, lovingly cared for Yama and Yami, and in time gave birth to a son: Shani, who would later become the planet of Karma, discipline and cosmic justice.
But as Shani grew older, something shifted within Chhaya. Though she still cared for Yama and Yami, the thought that her son would never be the eldest, that he would always remain in the shadow of Yama, began to trouble her.
Her love slowly turned cold.
One day, while Yama, Yami and Shani were playing. Shani tripped over Yama's foot and fell to the ground. It was a small accident, but it triggered Chhaya's buried resentment. In a moment of emotional outburst she cursed Yama to become mortal.... and to die.
The moment the words left her lips, she realized what she had done. She broke down in tears.
When Surya learned of the incident, he was shocked, how could a mother curse her own child? His suspicions grew, and after confronting Chhaya, the truth emerged.
The real Sanjana had left long ago.
Surya was shattered. Realizing his blindness, how his brilliance had overshadowed his own family, he set off to find her. He searched across realms, through the heavens and the Earth and finally found Sanjana living the life of an ascetic in the forest.
To win her back, he did something extraordinary, he requested Vishwakarma to trim down his brilliance.
Love too, sometimes requires us to dim our light.
Even the Sun, for love, becomes a sunset. And that's why sunsets are romantic. They carry the humility of the divine.
But Yama, ever righteous, ever calm accepted his fate.
Even when his father tried to reverse the curse, Yama chose to honor it.
"If this is to be my path," he said
"then let me walk it with diginity."
Seeing this, Surya was filled with pride.... and sorrow.
Unable to forgive Chhaya for what she had done, he disowned her and distanced himself from her child, but that.... is a story for another time.
And so, Yama became the first mortal to die.
Moved by his choice, to accept death willingly, without anger, without fear. Lord Brahma appointed him as the protector of souls and the eternal judge of Dharma.
Thus was born Yamaloka, the realm of justice.
And thus rose Dharmaraj, not as a god of fear,
but as the guardain of truth.
Excellent story telling. Waiting for next piece.
